Die geographische Ebene und Perspektive sind wichtige Bestandteile jeder historischen Forschung. Ob man ein historisches Phänomen auf lokaler oder globaler Ebene betrachtet, ist von wesentlicher Bedeutung für die historische Analyse. Was auf lokaler Ebene ausschlaggebend zu sein scheint, ist auf globaler Ebene oft irrelevant, und umgekehrt. Anhand von theoretischer und methodologischer Richtlinien und Fallstudien und der vorhandenen Literatur zur modernen Geschichte Kosovos (spätes Osmanisches Reich bis zur Gegenwart) möchte diese Übung einen systematischen Überblick über verschiedene Forschungsebenen bieten und aufzeigen, wie sich verschiedene Forschungsebenen evtl. ergänzen. Insbesondere sollen im Rahmen der Übung methodische Ansätze zu folgenden Ebenen betrachtet werden:

-          Globale Ebene: Weltsystem-Theorie; Balkanismus/Orientalismus; Unterentwicklung; Internationale Politik.

-          Osmanisches Reich: Osmanisches Erbe; Zentrum und Peripherie; Grenzräume; Phantomgrenzen. 

-          Nationalstaat: Jugoslawien vor und nach 1945, das heutige Kosovo als unabhängige Republik; Innere Kolonialisierung, Nationsbildung, Minderheitenpolitik.

-          Regionale Ebene: regionale Ungleichheit im sozialistischen Jugoslawien

-          Lokale Ebene: Lokalgeschichte, Alltagsgeschichte, Stadtgeschichte. 

Die Übung behandelt Texte und Studien zur modernen Geschichte Kosovos hauptsächlich, um sich mit neueren Methoden und Theorien vertraut zu machen.

This Proseminar analyses the particularities of urbanism in small and medium-sized cities of Southeast Europe. These have been badly neglected in urban studies, although they account for a large part of the urban population and display patterns that clearly set them apart from the larger national and regional capitals. Their populations are shrinking and ageing, their industrial enterprises and built environment dilapidated and their political relevance minimal. The first part of the course looks into the historical processes of small-city urbanisation in the Balkans. We particularly analyse the belated but accelerated urbanisation of Southeast Europe under the ideological premises of socialist development and modernisation after the Second World War. The second part of the course analyses the legacy of socialist urbanisation in contemporary small cities of Southeast Europe, with a particular focus on demographic developments, the social and material value of the built environment, deindustrialisation, and political economy. The course will use case-studies of particular small and medium-sized cities in the Balkans from a wide range of disciplines (urban geography, sociology, urban history, anthropology) to come to a characterisation of small-city urbanism in the Balkans.

Theories of European urbanity have been constructed on two axes. One defines the European city in the Weberian tradition as the foundation of democracy, civil society, and entrepreneurship and focusses on the cities of north-western Europe. The other contrasts the modern European city with its public and social profile to the extreme individualism of US cities. This seminar critically engages with these theories of European urbanity from the perspective of Southeast Europe, which has remained on the margins of European urban studies. The seminar takes a historical approach, scrutinising four historical appearances of the Southeast European city: Ottoman cities, national cities, socialist cities, and post-socialist cities. After an introduction to the central theories on European urbanity, the first part of the seminar (2 courses) explores the characteristics of the Ottoman city in Southeast Europe as a cultural, socio-economic and political space. The second part of the seminar (2 courses) looks at efforts to nationalise Southeast European cities during the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, engaging with concepts of internal colonialism. The third part (3 courses) scrutinises socialist urban transformation in the region, relating the socialist city to studies of socio-spatial segregation, accelerated urban development, and modernist urban planning. The fourth and final part of the paper critically examines the notion of the post-socialist city, identifying typical features of contemporary cities in Southeast Europe (shrinking cities, deindustrialisation, informality). The seminar will use case-studies of cities in Southeast Europe from a wide range of disciplines (urban geography, sociology, urban history, anthropology) and cross-refer to global urban studies.

Intersectionality is a concept developed in feminist theories that refers to the interdependency and interrelation of social divisions of gender, race/ethnicity and class, but also age, religion and region. The overlap of these categories of social vision and division allows us to analyse the production of social relations (discrimination in particular), from the abstract level of discourses and institutional framework to the concrete level of social interaction. The model is particularly useful for studying the multidimensional articulation and remarkable endurance of forms of social division and identity in the twentieth-century history of Southeast Europe. The course will be devoted to case-studies of social division and hierarchy covering various states and regions of Southeast Europe and various periods within the twentieth century. Some of the case-studies will deal with intersection of nationhood, religion, regional inequality, urban and rural identities, class and gender.

Diese Übung bietet eine Einleitung zu Bildungsgeschichte anhand des jugoslawischen 20. Jahrhundert. Die Übung betrachtet Bildungsstatistik, Schulbücher, Lehrpläne, Pädagogik, und informelle Erziehung als wichtige Domänen und Quellen für historische Forschung und macht TeilnehmerInnen bekannt mit methodologischen Ansätzen und historischen Fragestellungen aus der Bildungsgeschichte. Die Übung basiert sich auf Fallstudien und Quellen aus dem jugoslawischen und post-jugoslawischen Bildungsbereich. Konkret beschäftigt die Übung sich mit:

-          Nationsbildung in Lehrpläne und Schulbücher des ersten Jugoslawiens (Zwischenkriegszeit)

-          Nachkriegsgedächtnis und Bildung: Krieg im Schulbücher, getrennte Schüle.

-          Informelle Bildung: Initiative zu gemeinjugoslawischen Schulbücher.

In der Übung steht Quellenanalyse im Vordergrund. Daneben hantiert die Übung auch methodologische Texte aus der internationalen Bildungsgeschichte und Schulbuchforschung.

Vor hundert Jahren wurde der erste südslawische Staat als Nationalstaat einer „dreieinigen Nation“ gegründet. Der Versuch, aus drei sog. Stämmen (Kroaten, Serben und Slowenen) – so die Terminologie der Zwischenkriegszeit – eine Nation zu schaffen blieb letztlich erfolglos. Jugoslawien zerfiel während der 1990er Jahre in Nationalstaaten. Statt einer südslawischen Nation konsolidierten sich sechs Nationen. Dabei sind drei weniger (Bosniaken und Makedonier) oder mehr umstrittene (Montenegriner) „neue“ Nationen. Auch die nicht-slawische Minderheiten haben sich kaum mit dem jugoslawischen Experiment identifiziert, wie die dauerhaft unklare Situation in Kosovo zeugt. Damit bietet das jugoslawische 20. Jahrhundert eine überdurchschnittliche Vielfalt an Fallstudien, die Einblick geben in dynamische und mehrdeutige Nationsbildungsprozesse. Dieses Proseminar möchte anhand solcher Fallstudien in theoretische Modelle und Fragestellungen der Nationalismusforschung einführen. Jede Sitzung widmet sich einem wichtigen Ansatz aus der neueren Nationalismusforschung und beleuchtet diesen anhand eines konkreten Beispiels aus der Geschichte Jugoslawiens. Im Vordergrund stehen die Zwischenkriegszeit, der jugoslawische „Sonderweg“ im Staatssozialismus wie auch der Zerfall Jugoslawiens.
