Fachdidaktik Englisch

Grammatical competence and word knowledge lead to communicative competence. However, there are divergent opinions on how and when to teach grammar and vocabulary in the foreign language classroom. In this seminar, we will discuss the necessity of explicit grammar teaching as we look at the theoretical background, examine various methods, instructions, and activities for teaching grammar and vocabulary. Additionally, we take a closer look at terms and approaches such as project-learning and teaching (TBLL/TBLT), lexico-grammar, and discourse. 

We develop, present, and discuss materials, learning tasks and activities for a project-based learning sequence. Credit requirements involve

• Regular attendance and active participation in class discussions and activities.
• Completion of individual or group assignments related to designing and implementing activities.
• Active engagement in collaborative learning activities, including (group) presentation of a micro-teaching unit.
• Submission of a short paper (10 to 15 pages) on the respective learning sequence that demonstrates practical application and critical reflection.

Please note: As this is a block seminar in which a lot of peer-to-peer exchange and discussion will take place, it is important that you participate fully in all sessions. This also applies to the digital units.

In this course we will explore one of the major milestones in a learner`s biography, the transition from primary to secondary school. The experience of this transition still varies extremely, often depending on the teacher. This is not surprising as EFL is still considered a fairly new subject at primary schools in Bavaria.
In this seminar we will discuss what impact the transition might have on pupils and teachers and we will take a closer look at the different curricula and the different EFL teaching methods applied at primary and secondary schools. The course aims to answer an important question for all (prospective) EFL teachers: What can EFL teachers of both primary and secondary schools do to make the transition a smooth process for their pupils?
A course plan and reading list will be provided in the first session.

Credit Requirements: Regular attendance, active and critical participation in group work, term paper

This course is obligatory for all those students who will be doing their „fachdidaktisches Begleitpraktikum” this coming semester.

We will discuss crucial aspects of teaching English like how to present and practise vocabulary/grammar etc., how to teach listening and reading strategies, what to do about errors, how to individualize language learning, how to plan lessons, how to analyse teaching materials and so on. In particular, we will focus on the practical demands of teaching EFL to very young learners as this requires a specific methodology which is mainly based on authentic materials, playful activities and a lot of L2 input. The aim of this course is to provide all students with theoretical background and practical expertise for their own consistent implementation of competence-based education.

Students wanting to attend this course must have passed the „Einführungskurs”.

Credit Requirements: Assessment will be based on active in-class participation and on a written term paper.

herzlich Willkommen zum GRIPS Kurs "Teaching Culture, Literature and Media".

This course is obligatory for all those students who will be doing their „fachdidaktisches Begleitpraktikum” this coming semester. Students should be aware that teaching English to very young learners requires a specific methodology which is mainly based on authentic materials, playful activities and a lot of L2 input. We will first of all analyze and discuss the methodological principals and then apply them to the planning of lessons, tasks and adequate forms of evaluation. Practical work and theoretical reflection will go hand in hand. In particular, we will deal with: rhymes and songs, games and activities, storytelling/picture books, cultural events and course books and other materials. Students wanting to attend this course must have passed the „Einführungskurs”.
Assessment will be based on active in-class participation and on a written term paper.

herzlich Willkommen zum GRIPS Kurs "Teaching Culture, Literature and Media".

This lecture provides an overview of key concepts and principles of teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). Among these concepts and principles are aspects such as theories of (second) language acquisition, communicative competences, the potential and methodology of using texts such as picturebooks, young adult novels, films and digital media in English language teaching (ELT) and developing cultural competences. Additionally, current debates on global education, education for sustainable development and approaches to assessment and evaluation will be reflected. Credit requirements: Regular attendance strongly recommended, final exam in last session.

In this course we will have a closer look at the objectives of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) published by the UNESCO. Based on a reflection on current challenges and opportunities of globalization and an alignment of the concept of ESD with existing concepts of intercultural learning and global education, we will discuss how and with what kind of material and methods ESD can be implemented in English language teaching (ELT). Participants are required to apply their existing knowledge and theories of ELT to this new field and explore its potential creatively. Credit requirements: interactive presentation and term paper.

Dieses Seminar dient zur Vorbereitung auf die Klausur „Fachdidaktik” im Staatsexamen und als allgemeines Repetitorium, um das Grundlagenwissen für die Examensprüfung zu festigen. Anhand von Prüfungsaufgaben der letzten Jahre und ergänzender Literatur werden zentrale fremdsprachendidaktische Themen diskutiert, analysiert und hinsichtlich ihrer Relevanz hinterfragt. 

Leistungsnachweis: Ausarbeitung eines Examensthemas (Handout) und Vorstellung/Diskussion im Rahmen einer Seminarsitzung.

Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an Studierende des Lehramts, die das Staatsexamen in Fachdidaktik Englisch ablegen werden. Hierfür werden die fachdidaktischen Kenntnisse bezüglich der vier im Staatsexamen gestellten Themenbereiche weiter vertieft: Sprachlerntheorien und individuelle Voraussetzungen des Spracherwerbs, Theorie und Methodik des kommunikativen Englischunterrichts, Theorien und Ziele des interkulturellen Lernens und deren Umsetzung im Unterricht, Ziele und Verfahren der Textarbeit im Hinblick auf interkulturelle, literarische und sprachliche Bildungsziele. Für die jeweiligen Aufgabenbereiche werden zudem verschiedene Staatsexamensaufgaben bearbeitet und gemeinsam besprochen. Für alle Studierende des nicht vertieften Lehramts (GS, RS, MS) ist regelmäßige Teilnahme sowie eine Präsentation für den Erhalt von Leistungspunkten Pflicht. Bei Interesse (und falls noch freie Kapazitäten vorhanden sind), können auch Studierende für Lehramt vertieft diesen Kurs zur Vorbereitung auf das Staatsexamen nutzen. Eine Anrechnung von Leistungspunkten (Voraussetzungen s.o.) für den Freien Bereich ist möglich.

Dieser Kurs richtet sich an Studierende aller Schularten mit Unterrichtsfach Englisch. Der Kurs vermittelt grundlegende Kenntnisse zu den Hintergründen von und dem gezielten Umgang mit Lese-Rechtschreib-Schwierigkeiten in Fremdsprachen allgemein und im Englischen im Speziellen. Es werden basale Konzepte des Schriftspracherwerbs dargestellt und gemeinsam Methoden zur Förderung der Lese- und Rechtschreibkompetenzen im Englischunterricht erarbeitet. Ziel ist es, die Studierenden zu befähigen – nach dem erfolgreichen Abschluss dieses Kurses – als Coaches für leserechtschreib-schwache Englischlerner an Schulen eingesetzt werden zu können. Das Zertifikat „LRS Coach in Fremdsprachen” wird nach erfolgreicher Praxisphase (Durchführung von Coachings an Schulen) ausgestellt. Der Leistungsnachweis besteht aus regelmäßiger, aktiver Teilnahme sowie einem Portfolio.

This course builds on the introduction to TEFL (”Einführung in die Didaktik der englischen Sprache und Literatur”) and offers a combination of theoretical knowledge and classroom practice to those students who have opted for ”Englisch als Didaktikfach der Grundschule”.
The course is meant to develop both language competence and teaching skills and will therefore focus on classroom language, language learning games, communicative activities, storytelling, songs, intercultural learning, using CLIL in the primary classroom, and many other aspects of teaching English to very young learners. 
Course requirements: presentation, practice lesson, term paper including exemplary lesson plan (”Unterrichtsentwurf”)

This seminar gives you the opportunity to reflect on your experiences as an observer and novice teacher of English at a Gymnasium during your internship. It also aims at bridging the gap between theory and practice of foreign language teaching. We will focus on topics like: lesson planning, content and methods of language teaching, teaching the four skills, assessing language proficiency and giving feedback as well as classroom management. This seminar should accompany and complement the ”studienbegleitendes fachdidaktisches Praktikum”. Students who have been abroad as assistant teachers also need to pass this course. Requirements: Regular attendance, active participation and portfolio work. Make sure you have also applied through the ”Praktikumsamt der MB-Dienststelle Oberpfalz” before you register in FlexNow. Note: Students can only take part after they have successfully passed the introduction to ELT.

This seminar will discuss the possibilities of using film and literature to address controversial issues such as suicide, bullying, sexual harassment, family issues, (cultural) identity construction, race,
class, gender and migration in the EFL classroom. Therefore, the seminar gives insights into dif-ferent techniques of incorporating Young Adult Fiction, short stories, TV series and movies into English lessons in order to use their motivational benefits, make the students discuss controversial issues and raise awareness about social problems. Credit requirements: Active participation, short presentation, term paper including exemplary lesson plan (”Unterrichtsentwurf”). Recom-mended reading will be discussed and presented at the beginning of the course.

The course is meant to develop both language competence and teaching skills and will therefore focus on classroom language, language learning games, communicative activities, storytelling, songs, intercultural learning, using CLIL in the primary classroom, and many other aspects of teaching English to very young learners. Participants should be aware that classroom observation and teaching will occasionally take place at the ”Montessori Grundschule Regensburg” (Prüfeninger Schloßstrasse 73c).

Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an Studierende des Lehramts an Gymnasien, die das mündliche Staatsexamen (nach „alter LPO”) oder das schriftliche Staatsexamen (nach „neuer LPO”) in Fachdidaktik Englisch ablegen werden. Hierfür werden die fachdidaktischen Kenntnisse bezüglich der vier im Staatsexamen gestellten Themenbereiche weiter vertieft: Sprachlerntheorien und individuelle Voraussetzungen des Spracherwerbs, Theorie und Methodik des kommunikativen Englischunterrichts, Theorien und Ziele des interkulturellen Lernens und deren Umsetzung im Unterricht, Ziele und Verfahren der Textarbeit im Hinblick auf interkulturelle, literarische und sprachliche Bildungsziele. „Learning a foreign language is more than a simple task of assembling lexical items in grammatically accurate sentences. It involves learning to communicate with others in that language and such communication involves an engagement with culture.” (Liddicoat 2005). This seminar takes a cultural perspective on ELT as a central paradigm in current language teaching. On top of that, we will explore the use of media in ELT classrooms.
