The goal of every teaching or training programme is to make students learn. Both students and teachers/trainers may see the content of a programme as most important. However, organising learning and executing that process is as important, especially because it is confined by factors of time and timing (e.g., lesson hour; training day), space(classroom; training centre) and group (teenagers who might not be motivated for school; medical specialists who are required to collect credits). Ideally, the focus of the teacher/trainer can be on learning only, in less optimal situations managing learning may instead turn into an exercise in disciplinary actions. Research on teachers shows that with growing experience/expertise, their focus shifts from discipline to learning and learning support, giving classroom management a different flavour.
In this seminar we’ll analyse a couple of teaching/training situations, including primary or secondary school teaching. Other situations might include operation theatre team training or change agent training, depending on the interests of the participants. We’ll focus on what makes teaching and learning in these situations difficult, and how the beginning teacher/trainer can be prepared and supported. The students will work in small groups.
