Introduction to General Psychology

The lecture (weekly, 2 hrs.) is aimed at first-year bachelor students of psychology and education science. A final exam (50 multiple-choice items) is given at the end of each term. The goal is to give students an overview of scientific knowledge on the following topics instructed over two terms:

Winter term: Perception

• Vision: retinal processing, visual pathways, visual cortex, color vision, visual motion processing, stereopsis and depth perception,
• Audition: auditory processing from cochlea to auditory cortex, frequency-selective neural processing, spatial hearing, central auditory pathways, hearing impairments
• Balance and self-motion perception: vestibular processing, central vestibular pathways, vestibular reflexes, self-motion processing, vertigo and motion sickness.
• Haptic and tactile perception: mechanoreceptors, tactile receptive fields, adaptation, central tactile pathways, somatosensory cortex.
• Temperature sensations and pain: thermoception versus nociception, receptor and fiber types, adaptation to hot and cold stimuli, role of homeostasis, acute/chronic pain perception, placebo effect, phantom-limb pain.
• Chemical senses: olfactory receptors, olfactory pathways, anatomy of olfactory bulb, central olfactory pathways, anosmia, taste receptors, gustatory central pathways.
• Higher cognitive processes related to perception: attention and working memory.

Summer term: Cognition

• Spatial cognition: neural basis of spatial cognition, multisensory integration, wayfinding and visual reality, spatial maps, hippocampus and place cells.
• Imaginary: paradigms and theory of mental imaginary, imaginary debate.
• Knowledge representation: models of knowledge representation.
• Language processing: from audition to language processing, Wernicke’s area, Broca’s area, aphasia, models of language comprehension and production.
• Problem-solving: cognitive models of problem solving, paradigms and experimental findings.
• Logical thinking, rationality: cognitive processes underlying thinking and rationality.
• Decision-making: prospect theory
• Concept formation and categorization: cognitive models of concept formation, basis-level concepts.
• Metacognition: paradigms, theory and experimental findings, animal cognition, role of prefrontal cortex in metacognition.
• Action planning, intention, free will: Experimental results and theory.

Gegenstand der Veranstaltung ist die Analyse und Modellierung von Verhaltensdaten mit der
Skriptsprache R, www.r-project.org und https://rstudio.com/. R hat einen riesigen
Funktionsumfang, ist in Sozial- und Naturwissenschaften weit verbreitet und zudem kostenlos
verfügbar. Damit ist es eine sehr gute Alternative zu kommerziellen Programmen wie z. B.
SPSS. Das Seminar beginnt mit einer Einführung in Datentypen, Programmierkonstrukte und
gängige Statistikfunktionen. Gegen Ende des Semesters werden computationale Modelle zu
Kognition und Verhalten behandelt.

In der Veranstaltung werden Versuchspläne und Auswertungstechniken für faktorielle Designs und visuelle Psychophysik vorgestellt. Die Veranstaltung ist mit einer Semesterwochenstunde angekündigt. Sie findet in zweistündigen wöchentlichen Sitzungen vom 20.04. bis zum 25.05. statt. Die Klausur findet am 08.06.2020 als elektronische Klausur in den CIP-Pools BIB3 und SGLG 5.11 statt.

Title: Facial expression recognition
Face perception serves as the basis for much of human social exchange. One of the key issues of current debate in psychology focuses on universality versus cultural relativity of emotional expression. The goal of the course is for students to acquire some practical skills to run and analyse psychophysical experiments. The theme of the experimental seminar is to explore the neurocognitive mechanisms involved in the mental process underlying the face identification and emotional expressions.

Title: Brain imaging – Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)

The course combines theoretical and practical principles of magnetic resonance imaging with hands-on experience in analyzing real MRI data. Our focus will be on the visual system. Emphasis will be placed on fMRI technique that allows us to measure brain activity during performing different perceptual tasks. The goal of the course is for students to acquire a basic understanding of what is measured in fMRI experiments, what are the limitations imposed by the method, how to design fMRI experiments and analyze the results, and what sort of conclusions can be drawn from those experiments.

In diesem Kurs werden Fertigkeiten zur Planung und Durchführung einer experimentellen Studie zur Betrachtung diverser Aspekte der visuellen Wahrnehmung vermittelt. Dabei kommen insbesondere psychophysikalische Methoden zum Einsatz. Zudem werden Fertigkeiten im Bereich der wissenschaftlichen Berichterstellung vermittelt.
