In the third of six workshops we will discuss strategies you need to effectively plan a paper. In this course, we will share strategies for reading through primary sources and secondary source academic papers and how to find the salient points of various types of articles. In this second of six workshops, we will explore the different genres of academic writing. A course-specific, embedded writing course/tutorial that aims at providing writing support, feedback, peer-review opportunities, writing-based conversations, and individual conferences for MA students currently composing and completing their Master thesis.

The course content reflects academic writing style guides from various disciplines, including law/legal studies, economics, political science, history, cultural studies, and literature.

Details - Content and Units:

The course focuses on various elements of effective thesis writing and provides students with the opportunity to participate in rigorous peer-reviews and engage in useful and individualized conferences with the given instructor. Throughout the course, students will be able to benefit from and utilize several relevant writing resources that will aid in the successful completion of the students’ thesis. These will be continually updated and made available via the LMS. 

This online course open to students writing a thesis, dissertation, or article for publication in the sciences in English.  This course guides you through the analysis and creation of an IMRAD paper (Introduction, Methods, Results, Analysis, Discussion). Using what you learn about the structure, grammar, and vocabulary commonly expected in each of these sections, you will write your own paper. You will receive individualized feedback on your writing from a trained and experienced native speaker throughout the teaching period, as well as have the opportunity to continue working in the lecture-free period. Please note that although the example texts are from the Life/Natural Sciences, students from a variety of disciplines (Psychology, Finance) have found this course useful.
