The course will introduce fundamental aspects of electron microscopy (with a focus on transmission electron microscopy).
Topics include: Electron sources, electron-optical elements, electron detectors, wave optics, elastic and inelastic interaction of fast electrons with materials, interpretation of image contrast, methods of electron microscopy, and current research fields in electron microscopy.
In the accompanying seminar, in addition to “traditional” exercises, quantitative models for describing electron-optical image formation are developed and implemented using Matlab scripts. Previous knowledge of Matlab scripting is not necessary. An introduction to Matlab will be offered.
