Global education brings educational relevance to the foreign language classroom through meaningful content based on real-world topics. With its focus on languages and different cultures and perspectives, the foreign language classroom is an appropriate background for achieving global awareness.
This seminar offers participants the opportunity to experience a small-scale virtual exchange in an English as a lingua franca environment hands-on. Together with international student teachers*, we will discuss global issues, didactic approaches, and media (both fictional and non-fictional) in order to develop complex competence tasks.

This seminar provides an overview of key concepts and principles of teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). Among these concepts and principles are aspects such as theories of (second) language acquisition, communicative competences, the potential and methodology of using texts such as picture books, young adult novels, films and digital media in English language teaching (ELT) and developing cultural competences. Additionally, current debates on global education, education for sustainable development and approaches to assessment and evaluation will be reflected.

Prerequisites: none

Compulsory and additional reading material as well as a topic overview and schedule will be announced in the first session.

Credit requirements: Regular attendance, final exam.

This course centers around clarifying the concept of culture, including current discussions about culture with a ‘little c’,
interculturality, transculturality and global education. We will look into different models of cultural competence (such
as intercultural communicative competence and symbolic competence), develop ways to foster cultural learning in the
classroom and practice them hands-on, for example with the help of role-plays and literature.

Students wanting to attend this course must have passed the Einführungsvorlesung “Introduction to ELT”! 

Credit Requirements: Assessment will be based on active in-class participation and a presentation.
