"Conversation is one of the most prevalent uses of human language. All human beings engage in conversational interaction and human society depends on conversation in order to function" (Liddicoat 2007: 1). Conversation analysis (CA) is concerned with the study of spoken language in interaction. In this course we will address the central concepts within CA (e.g. turn-taking, adjacency pairs, repair, et al.). We will also carry out hands-on exercises to get acquainted with the methods and the tools for doing CA, based on data from fictional (e.g. TV shows) as well as non-fictional language; additionally, we will discuss some of the challenges of data collection and analysis. At the end of the course the students will demonstrate a good understanding the topics and methods of CA. The students will be asked to apply their knowledge to design a short, fictitious research proposal exploring in greater depth one of the topics covered in the course.
